Hallmark
What is a Hallmark?
A Hallmark is an identification mark. It is an official mark stamped in accordance with legal regulations to certify the purity of precious metals and products made from them. It is typically found on the inside of rings, on the clasp (lock) area or ends of necklaces, on the clasps of bracelets, and on the pin parts of earrings. Jewelry manufacturers are responsible for marking products with these hallmarks. This hallmark is an important indicator that certifies both the quality/purity and the authenticity/legality of the metal or product made from the metal.
Silver Purity and Equivalents
The purity of silver jewelry is generally expressed using the "thousandths system". The most common and standard purity level accepted in the jewelry industry is 925.
- 999 Purity (Fine Silver): Nearly 100% pure. Due to its softness, it is difficult to use in jewelry form; it is generally used for investment purposes as ingots or granules.
- 950 Purity: Contains 95% pure silver. It is softer than 925 and is often preferred for artistic designs requiring extensive handcrafting.
- 925 Purity (Sterling Silver): Contains 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% alloy (usually copper). This purity achieves the most ideal hardness and durability for jewelry making.
- Gold Purity and Equivalents
The purity of gold is expressed in "Karat" (K) or by the thousandths system. The most common ratios in the jewelry world are:
- 24 Karat Gold (999.9 / 999/ 995): Pure gold. Rarely used in jewelry, mostly for investment.
- 22 Karat Gold (916): Contains 91.6% pure gold. Generally used in bracelets, identification tags, necklaces, earrings, and rings.
- 18 Karat Gold (750): 75% pure gold. Commonly used in gemstone jewelry. It is the global standard for diamond and high-quality jewelry.
- 14 Karat Gold (585): 58.5% pure gold. Preferred for being both affordable and durable.
- 8 Karat Gold (333): 33.3% pure gold. Used in more affordable and durable products.
Important Notes to Know
Hallmark and Logo: Next to the hallmark, there may also be the manufacturer's logo or patent mark, producer code, or country mark. This is an additional assurance that the brand stands behind its product.
